RED CAR WAS FOUNDED IN 2000 BY CARROLL KEMP AND MARK ESTRIN, WHO IS NOW DECEASED. IT ALL STARTED AS A 50 CASE PRODUCTION OF SYRAH FROM A SINGLE TON OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY GRAPES. THE INTENT WAS SIMPLE: SOURCE GREAT GRAPES, MAKE GREAT WINE AND MARKET IT IN AN INNOVATIVE, ORIGINAL WAY. TODAY, WE ARE DEDICATED TO SYRAH AND PINOT NOIR FROM THE COOL COASTAL REGIONS OF THE SONOMA COAST. OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE WINES OF RICH CONCENTRATION THAT OFFER AROMATIC COMPLEXITY, VARIETAL TRANSPARENCY, AND VIVID SEPARATION BETWEEN THE LAYERS OF SUBTLE FLAVORS. WE WANT OUR WINES TO EXCITE THE PALATE AND THE MIND. GREAT WINES ARE FIRST AND FOREMOST A RESULT OF SUPERB RAW MATERIAL. THIS MEANS CAREFULLY CHOSEN SITES, CUTTING EDGE VITICULTURE, AND, OF COURSE, LOW YIELDS. USING BOTH OLD WORLD AND MODERN TECHNIQUES, WE ALLOW THAT MATERIAL TO SHOW ITS UNIQUE CHARACTER BY DOING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE TO MANIPULATE IT. WE ARE LOVERS OF WINE, NOT WOOD. WE'LL UTILIZE FRENCH OAK AS A SPICE, TO ENHANCE BUT NOT OVERWHELM THE WINE. IN ORDER TO AVOID STRIPPING AWAY FLAVOR AND AROMA, WE DO NOT INTEND TO FINE OR FILTER.
THE 2008 HARVEST WAS THE FIRST FROM OUR 128-ACRE ESTATE PROPERTY LOCATED IN THE "TRUE" SONOMA COAST. IT IS ALSO THE FIRST WHERE ALL OUR FRUIT IS FROM SONOMA COUNTY. THE TOTAL PRODUCTION OF THE WINERY IS AROUND 6,000 CASES ANNUALLY.
